He'd spent years building from nothing. Then, the fork in the road hit 'em.
Path A: Bring in venture capital. Add experienced executives. Welcome co-founders. Your ownership slice gets smaller. You lose voting control. But the whole company explodes.
He took that path. Watched his stake dilute. Stepped down as CEO eventually. Professional managers took over. He said most people he knew who made it far eventually faced the same choice, and he wanted the biggest outcome possible. So he didn't mind handing over the reins.
Path B: Keep absolute control. Bootstrap everything. Grow only with revenue you generate. Guard your equity close. Slower momentum. Limited resources. But it stays independent. It stays yours. It stays true to what you built.
Another friend chose this one. He watched better-funded rivals pull ahead. But he preferred owning 100% of something meaningful over a small piece of a huge company he no longer ran.
Both built empires. Both made it. But neither could have both the massive outcome and the absolute control. You *usually* cannot have both.
I saw one path leave someone richer in options and the other richer in peace.
And right now I see the same fork they both already crossed.
I think I've already chosen. But then, what even is choice?
Leave a thought.
