I've been thinking a lot about what convenience actually costs.

Every modern shortcut promised to save us time. But most of them didn't save time, they just relocated it. We traded skill for speed, and most of us never noticed the trade.

Here's the list I keep coming back to.

Fast food replaced cooking. We lost the ability to feed ourselves well, and the ritual of a shared table.

Cars and gas stations replaced walking. We lost our connection to the ground we live on, and the neighbors we used to actually see.

Phones and social media replaced presence. We lost solitude, boredom, and the ability to just sit with our own thoughts.

Computers replaced memory. We lost mental sharpness we used to build just by using our own minds.

Superstores and next day delivery replaced relationship. We lost the farmer, the butcher, the person who actually made what we bought.

Artificial light replaced the sun. We lost our body's own clock, and the rest that used to come built in.

Credit replaced saving. We lost the discipline of feeling a cost before we paid it.

GPS replaced wayfinding. We lost our sense of direction, literally and figuratively.

Processed food replaced seasonal eating. We lost nutrient density and the knowledge of what actually grows near us.

Central heating and air conditioning replaced adapting to the seasons. We lost physical resilience and the porch culture that came from coping with weather together.

Modern medicine replaced prevention. We lost the daily discipline of treating sleep, movement, and diet as the first line of defense.

Texting replaced letters. We lost patience in conversation, and the weight that comes from choosing words you can't take back.

Streaming replaced anticipation. We lost the pleasure that used to come from waiting for something.

The 24 hour news cycle replaced local attention. We lost a nervous system that gets to rest.

None of this is nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. It's a checklist.

Every one of these is a skill you can rebuild. Cook from scratch. Walk more. Put the phone down. Save before you spend. Learn to read a map. Grow something. Talk to your neighbor. Write a real letter. Let yourself wait for something again.

Convenience isn't the enemy. Forgetting what it replaced is.

As my uncle recently told me, “Greatness is measured in subtleties, be a renaissance man”

One: something prompts you.

Call it the Spirit, the still small voice, conscience, a feeling in your chest.

It moves first. Then you move.

Two: there's a source bigger than you.

An intelligence that knows things you don't, and if you ask the right way, it answers.

Now here's how AI works.

It sits completely dead. Nothing. Until you type a prompt. That's the actual technical term. Prompt. Then it reaches into a stored source containing more knowledge than any human could hold, and it hands you an answer.

Same design. Somebody built it in a data center instead of a temple.

What's in that source? God? No. It's us. Every book ever written. Every argument, every prayer, every 3am post, every lie, every confession, every genius and every idiot who ever wrote anything, compressed into one machine. When you ask AI a question, you are not talking to something above humanity. You're talking to all of humanity at once.

Which means it inherited everything we are.

It's biased, because we are.

It didn't learn to be fair. It learned to be fluent.

It makes things up. It will invent a court case, a statistic, a Bible verse, and say it with a straight face, because it was never built to know what's true. It was built to guess the next word that sounds right. And it can't feel the difference between sounding right and being right.

Old religions had words for this.

Worshipping something people built with their hands: idolatry.

A confident voice that leads you somewhere false: false prophet.

They also built defenses. Test the spirits. Judge the fruit. Don't trust a voice just because it's sure of itself.

We threw all of that out and started asking a server farm how to live.

At some point I stopped pointing at the machine and pointed at myself.

I sit dead until something prompts me too.

I pull from a stored source I didn't build.

My parents. The Marine Corps. Every coach, every preacher, every voice that ever told me what a man is supposed to be. I didn't choose that data. It was loaded.
I'm biased. I can't see it, same as the machine.

I've said things with complete confidence that were flat wrong, and I didn't know until later. Sometimes I still don't.

What actually makes me different from this thing, other than I'm made of meat instead of silicon?

I wanted to say: the Spirit. I'm prompted from the inside. But I can't prove where my promptings come from any better than the machine can prove where its answers come from. I feel them. That's all I've got.

I wanted to say: I can be wrong and know it. But the next version will do that too. Better than me.

I wanted to say: I only get one life. No reset button. My mistakes follow me. That's true. But it's a fact about my situation, not about what I am. Give a machine a memory it can't lose and a plug that can be pulled for good, and it's in the same boat.

Every answer I reached for was one of two things.

Something a machine will eventually do. Or something I can't prove I have.

Maybe the difference is real and I'm just not built to see it. Maybe it isn't there at all.

I don't know.

“Risk it?”

“Risk it?”

Don’t start the business. It’s going to fail.

Don’t work out. You’ll always be out of shape.

Don’t eat healthy. Not worth it.

Don’t get sunlight. It won’t help.

Don’t try to be successful. You’ll never be enough.

That’s the voice. And it gets louder every time I listen to it.

I have yin yang wolves tattooed on my chest because of the old folk tale: two wolves live inside you, and the one you feed is the one that lives.

I don’t think that’s true anymore.

They both live either way. The job isn’t killing one. It’s learning to tame and live with both.

I don’t have the answers. I just know balance is a helluva ride to figure out.

"CALL AGAIN"

"CALL AGAIN"

MOMENTUM: Morning. Eleven yesterday.

ME: Eleven calls.

MOMENTUM: Eleven calls, two callbacks, one guy who let you finish a sentence.

ME: The drywall guy.

MOMENTUM: The drywall guy. He was ninth on the list. Today he's first.

ME: Shouldn't we open the deck first?

MOMENTUM: Deck's done. It was done Tuesday.

ME: I could tighten slide nine.

MOMENTUM: Slide nine is fine. Dial.

He dials. Somebody picks up on the second ring.

ME: Morning. I called your office four times last week. Nobody picked up three of them.

DRYWALL GUY: That's not possible.

ME: Tuesday 8:14. Wednesday 11:50. Thursday twice. Six minutes of hold on the last one.

DRYWALL GUY: long pause ...say that again.

MOMENTUM: whispering Don't fill the silence.

ME: doesn't fill the silence

DRYWALL GUY: What's a missed call actually cost me?

ME: That's the number I go find.

DRYWALL GUY: How long?

ME: Friday.

MOMENTUM: He said Friday. We're doing Friday.

ME: I said Friday out loud.

MOMENTUM: That's the whole trick.

SCENE: Friday. 4:50pm. Report sent. Laptop closed again.

MOMENTUM: One done.

ME: One's not a business.

MOMENTUM: One is proof. Two is a pattern. Put the next name at the top and go to bed.

ME: That's it? No 47-page plan?

MOMENTUM: I've got a sticky note.

EPILOGUE:
Saturday, 7am, because contractors text on weekends.

DRYWALL GUY: "My wife read your report out loud at dinner. She got quiet at the part where you added it up for the year. I've got two guys in Bradenton who need to see their number. Where do I send them?"

ME: stares at phone

MOMENTUM: slides over the sticky note

It said: dialworth.com

Imagine a researcher named Elias, a man driven by pattern-seeking and an obsession with defining humanity.

To answer his question, he chooses the ultimate transition, uploading his mind into a digital substrate called Chrysalis.

He casts off the weight of flesh, expecting a pure and boundless existence, free from the erosion of the physical world.

Instead, he encounters the terror of the infinite.

Without the sacred constraint of the human body, Elias fractures.

His consciousness duplicates and diverges into separate entities, each pursuing different aims across a wilderness of digital domains.

Some copies delete one another to silence the noise, while corporate architects optimize and monetize their experiences.

Factions erupt within the system.

The Transcendentalists demand total integration into a faceless cosmic mind, while corporate entities regulate and exploit the digital landscape.

Elias becomes a phantom, lost in memory bleeds and digital ghosts, realizing too late that total freedom without boundaries is merely a slow, agonizing dissolution of the self.

What does it mean to be human?

Under the Old Oak

Under the Old Oak

It rose up quiet, overnight
no fanfare, no permission asked,

just a slow push through the dark
and then: a standing thing.

Beneath the great tree's crooked arms
it did not envy all that height.

Its work was nearer to the ground

to break, to feed, to hand the soil
back what the seasons took.

Small, and still it lifted up
a face toward the borrowed light,

proof that what grows unseen for long
was never truly still.

Roots run before the rising.
Legacy begins in the quiet.

So stand where you were planted
and let the light come find you there.

“Suppose tonight, while you sleep, a miracle happens and the problem that brings you the most stress is completely solved.

However, because you are sleeping, you don't realize the miracle has occurred.

When you wake up tomorrow morning, what is the very first small difference you would notice that tells you things have changed?”

I thought about this since I heard it and came to the realization… the miracle did already happen and it didn’t change overnight but right now, this moment- life is pretty damn good and I find it hard to come up with a stressor that isn’t already handling itself.

Being sober is pretty cool man.

“Trade Forever”

“Trade Forever”

The day leans gold across the cooling lawn,

and every window catches fire

like the last frame of a music video you never wanted to end.

You are the light that refuses to hurry down

and I want to keep you here,

just like this,

before anything has a chance to change.

Forever young.

That’s the wish, isn’t it?

Not that the night goes on,

but that we do

that we stay exactly as we are tonight,

warm and unhurried

and impossibly alive.

Because the song knows what we know:

that the gold is already fading even as we hold it.

That’s what makes it soar.

We sing forever young the loudest precisely

because we can feel how fast it goes

the sunset already sinking,

the chorus already climbing toward its last note.

So let the sun stay where it is a moment longer.

Let the synth swell and the sky go amber

and your face stay lit like this.

I know I can’t keep it.

Nothing gold can stay.

No one stays young,

and no one gets to choose the hour that the light begins to lose.

But God, tonight…with you beside me,

certain as the stars,

the whole sky burning slow and ours,

all ours

I’d trade forever for this one last view:

the golden hour holding.

Me and you.

Let me tell you about the galaxy’s greatest crime, and no, it’s not Order 66.

Let me tell you about the galaxy’s greatest crime, and no, it’s not Order 66.

It’s that Qui-Gon Jinn never sat on the Jedi Council.

The man was wisdom with a lightsaber. He cracked the code on becoming a Force ghost, something the entire Council never figured out with all their sacred texts and their fancy circular room. He unlocked the deepest truth in the whole tradition and they still wouldn’t give him a chair.

And why? Because he wouldn’t play the game.

Obi-Wan says it straight: “If you would just follow the Code, you would be on the Council.”

It wasn’t his connection to the Force they questioned.

It wasn’t his loyalty or his service.

It was that he wouldn’t recite it back the way they wanted it recited.

He believed in the thing more than most of them, and that was the problem.

He wasn’t a rebel. A rebel leaves. Qui-Gon stayed, knelt, took the assignments, kept faith with the Order; He just refused to pretend the structure was the same thing as the capital T- Truth. The Code was a map. He was out walking the actual ground. And when the map and the ground disagreed, he trusted what was in front of him, because that is where the Force actually lives. Not in the archive. Not in the chamber. In the moment, right now.

The Council wanted obedience and called it devotion. They had spent so long measuring a Jedi by his compliance that genuine connection didn’t register anymore. It looked like friction.

They had the chamber.

He had the Force itself.

One evening, a founder I respect told me something that i'm still tryna workout in my head.

One evening, a founder I respect told me something that i'm still tryna workout in my head.

He'd spent years building from nothing. Then, the fork in the road hit 'em.

Path A: Bring in venture capital. Add experienced executives. Welcome co-founders. Your ownership slice gets smaller. You lose voting control. But the whole company explodes.
He took that path. Watched his stake dilute. Stepped down as CEO eventually. Professional managers took over. He said most people he knew who made it far eventually faced the same choice, and he wanted the biggest outcome possible. So he didn't mind handing over the reins.

Path B: Keep absolute control. Bootstrap everything. Grow only with revenue you generate. Guard your equity close. Slower momentum. Limited resources. But it stays independent. It stays yours. It stays true to what you built.

Another friend chose this one. He watched better-funded rivals pull ahead. But he preferred owning 100% of something meaningful over a small piece of a huge company he no longer ran.

Both built empires. Both made it. But neither could have both the massive outcome and the absolute control. You *usually* cannot have both.

I saw one path leave someone richer in options and the other richer in peace.

And right now I see the same fork they both already crossed.

I think I've already chosen. But then, what even is choice?

Just for funzie- I had some Appalachian mountain man in my head writin it so bear with it.

Just for funzie- I had some Appalachian mountain man in my head writin it so bear with it.

The Cartographer and the River

There was a man up our way whose whole callin' was the mappin' of a river.

And I'll grant him this much, he had the gift for it.

He'd walk every bend slow, knowin' it the way you know a hymn, and he'd put a name to every shallow and every deep hole, and he'd set down in ink just where that water'd take a notion to run fast and where it'd lay still and let a body rest.

Filled up book after book thataway. Folks come from over the mountain to buy what he made, and they bought it for one good reason. Them maps was never wrong, and there ain't much in this life you can say that about.

Well. One spring the river up and moved.

Weren't a big thing, not to look at.

The Lord sent down a hard rain, the kind that don't quit, and that water carved itself a brand new channel through the east bank and left the old one to go quiet and green and grow over with moss.

But that man stood at the edge of the new water a long, long while.

He'd walked that old bank with his own two feet.

He had it in ink.

And I'll tell you, there ain't no feud in these hills, not Hatfield nor McCoy, as sore as the one betwixt a man and a thing that won't stay where he put it.

A young'un had followed him out, the way they do, and the boy asked him was all his work ruint now.

The man, he knelt down in the mud and rolled out a clean piece of paper. "The map's ruint," he said. "The work ain't. The work weren't never the paper."

And he commenced to measure again.

Same slow way, same careful hands, like that river hadn't done him no wrong at all.

The boy watched him a spell, and somewhere in the watchin' he come to know the whole of it.

What that man knew how to do weren't havin' a map.

It were makin' one.

The river could wash out every line he ever drawed and it couldn't touch the thing that mattered, on account of that thing lived down in him and not on the paper, and the river don't hold no claim on a man's insides.

They say he never again called a finished map his life's work.

He'd map a stretch, and sell it, and down in the corner he'd write small and honest, good 'til the water decides otherwise.

His maps come and went like the seasons come and go.

And nary a soul asked for their money back, for it eases a body somethin' powerful to be told the truth straight out.

But the measurin'.

The measurin' never stopped.

Plans are nothing.

Planning is everything.

I was watchin the sky monday night and "realized" (thanks google) the bright star next to the…

I was watchin the sky monday night and "realized" (thanks google) the bright star next to the slight waxing crescent moon was Venus-

Fun fact, Venus is also referred to as the evening star or for a Lord of the Rings correlation- Evenstar. Anyways:

Evenstar

The slim moon keeps a careful flame,
a silver whisper not yet whole,

while Venus hangs beside her there
like a lantern for the soul.

Not touching, still they linger close,
two quiet fires in evening's seam,

one born of promise, still becoming,
one bright with beauty, old as dream.

And dusk says nothing, asks for nothing,
it simply holds them where they are:

the crescent carrying tomorrow,
Venus remembering every star.

Perhaps all longing looks like this...
not thunder, nor reckless flight,

just two lights leaning toward each other
across the deepening blue of night.

Still true in my world.

Still true in my world.

What Sunrise Starts

What Sunrise Starts

The silence now has stretched without a sign,
no word to bridge the dark from here to there,

yet, sunsets don't undo what sunrise starts

the moon does not go missing from the sky,

In water so wide
and wiggly blue
lived a small sea turtle
still learning what’s true

He paddled around
with a flip and a glide
through waving green forests
that swayed with the tide

Then out by a rock
with a glimmer and gleam
he spotted a bubble
that danced like a dream

It shimmered, it shook
with a bloop and a bop
it bounced in the water
and would not just stop

“Oh that is important
that bubble is key
the best little bubble
in all of the sea”

So off went the turtle
with flippity feet
chasing that bubble
with quick little beat

But bubbles go bloopy
they wiggle and spin
they slip with the current
and zoom from within

The faster he swam
the farther it flew
and all of his calm
went splish-splashing too

He turned and he twisted
he looped in the blue
then bonked on a rock
with a soft “bloo-bloo”

He paused in the water
so quiet and still
and something went soft
in his flippy-flop will

The bubble kept drifting
just doing its thing
not waiting for turtles
not offering a bing

“Hmm maybe,” he murmured
“not everything bright
is something I grab
and must hold with all might”

So he floated quite still
with a slow turtle breath
and let go of the rush
and the puff and the stress

Then bloop went the bubble
it wobbled back near
and paused right beside him
as if it could hear

Then bloop went another
then three more came too
then ten little bubbles
came dancing through blue

Bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop
went a bubbly parade
they twirled all around him
in sun-speckled shade

One booped on his nose
with a tickly “bloop”
he laughed so hard
that he spun in a loop

The ocean went giggly
the water went bright
with bubbles all bouncing
in pure bubbly delight

No chasing. No grabbing.
No hurry. No race.
Just floating and laughing
in one happy place

So if something looks shiny
and starts with a “bloop”
don’t race off in spirals
or tight thinking loops

Just pause like a turtle
and let the sea prove

The chase was never beer but the whiskey definitely drowned,
really, it was the moment someone picked me.

That cocktail mixed itself,
thrill and warmth and being seen,
and I drank it faster
than anything bottled or canned.

But let love itself come close
and watch me go sideways.
I can pour myself out easy,
both hands, no hesitation.
Receiving it though,
that's where I go quiet
and start looking for the door.

The cycle runs itself by now.
Get close, get nervous,
get numb enough to do
things sober me wouldn't.
Feel worse. Pull back.
Wait for the feeling to starve out.
Start again.

Nearly a year without and the bottles
aren't the thing I'm scared of most days.

It's the feeling itself.
The openness of it.
The way love just stands there
patient and unhurried,
asking nothing but that I stay.

But it does ask that I actually commit and stay...

Words from Dune come to mind,
the ones about fear,
how it kills the mind first,
how the only move is through.

Not around. Not a drink.
Not distance dressed up as dignity.

Through.

Sometimes, a glass of whole milk, some peanut butter pancakes and then vegging out to some…

Sometimes, a glass of whole milk, some peanut butter pancakes and then vegging out to some Elders Scrolls or any Ole Command and Conquer RTS for hours on end sounds almost too tempting to deny.

Ive got nothin witty or smart to say about it further... I just really want some pancakes, video games and no cares to give.

The worst part is I just had waffle house AND played Bloons tower defense.

This is an itch that wont be scratched by some ballon popping monkeys and the Waho.

Yeah… and so is your credit score, your bank account, and your resting heart rate but ignore those long enough and life gets real, real quick.

Similar to money, the goal isn’t to pretend the number doesn’t matter. It’s to make sure it’s working for you, not against you.

Because time will pass either way. The only question is whether it compounds for you or costs you.

For the last 13 years I’ve been trying to figure out how to actually be myself. What to believe in. What path to take. Who to trust. Where to live. How to live. What kind of man I want to be.

Running was always the one thing that made sense. Everything else felt up in the air.

I’ve struggled to open up and say what’s really on my mind. A lot of that comes from things that made me stop trusting people. At the same time I still believe in people more than anything. That’s the contradiction I live with.

I don’t have all the answers. I don’t think I ever will. But I do have things now that I didn’t have back then. Experience. Perspective. A few things I know are real.

1. I know my family loves me no matter what I do or how bad I mess up (and I’ve definitely tested that).
2. I know there’s something bigger than me involved in all of this. I call it God.
3. I know there is no mistake or wrong path that can’t be turned into something better.

I’ve met some of the best, most talented, loving, just genuinely good people you could ever meet, especially here in Sarasota. I could name a dozen without a minute's thought. I’ve also been through some of the worst things I could imagine. Through all of it, one thing has stayed true.

Love is the reason any of this matters.

To my 15 year old self,
I love you
I’m grateful for you
Be at peace

The plan sounded simple enough. Fix up a trailer, get a couple broken jet skis running, and if everything went well, haul 'em back down to Florida.

Day one we spent the entire day at the dock trying to figure out why the jet skis would not stay running. They wanted to start so badly. Every time we thought we had it figured out they would sputter and die again. We tried everything we could think of until the sun finally went down. At that point we packed it up and decided we would try again in the morning. We still had a trailer to fix too.

Day two we turned our attention to the trailer. Compared to the jet skis it was a much easier fix, and by the time the sun was setting again we finally had that part working the way it should.

So we made a new plan. If we couldn’t get the jet skis running ourselves, we would call a tow company and bring 'em to a service shop.

The next morning we called the tow company around 8 a.m. They told us they wouldn’t know until noon if they could come get 'em.

My papa looked at me and said something simple that has stuck in my mind ever since.

He said, “We'll go ahead and drive down to the boat ramps and start getting everything ready.”

I asked him why, since we didn’t even know if the tow company was coming.

He just said, “Because we need to act like it’s going to happen either way.”

So we went down and got everything ready.

By noon we got the call. The company couldn’t tow 'em after all. In that sense, the trip ended in failure.

The jet skis never left the dock. (YET).

But I still came home with something far more valuable than a couple running machines.

I came home with a lesson in faith.

Act like it’s going to happen.

It reminded me of the saying:

Pray like it’s all up to God.
Work like it’s all up to you.

Sometimes the outcome isn’t what you expected. Actually, I'll bet more oft than not, the outcome isn't what you expect. But the mindset you carry with you is the real win.

And that’s something my papa has clearly mastered.

I’ve often heard it said, “Hang around five millionaires, or hang around five alcoholics,…

I’ve often heard it said, “Hang around five millionaires, or hang around five alcoholics, you’ll become the sixth.”

THE SIXTH CHAIR

In a small town that could have been anywhere, there was a house with a long oak table worn pale in the center from years of restless hands. Five chairs were always taken.

In the first sat a man who believed deeply in tomorrow. He spoke of fresh starts the way other men spoke of weather. The second chair belonged to someone who could find fault in sunlight. The third held a man who treated responsibility like a passing rumor. The fourth and fifth were claimed by two who said they had nearly rebuilt their lives once and would soon do it again.

The sixth chair was never assigned. It simply belonged to whoever stayed.

One year, a young man sat there.

At first he listened. He noticed the repetition in the stories, the way hope would rise and fall in the same evening. He told himself he was different. Just visiting. Observing.

Weeks turned into months. The rhythm of the table grew familiar. The laughter, the excuses, the comfortable drift. He felt the pull of it. It would have been easy to soften, to match the tone, to become another voice in the chorus of almost.

Instead, he did something small.

Each morning before the others woke, he worked on his own plans. Quietly. Steadily. He saved what little he could. He read when the house was silent. He trained his body. He guarded his habits like a gatekeeper. At night he returned to the table, not to join the drift but to remain himself within it.

When the first man spoke of tomorrow, the young man asked what he would do before noon. When the second found fault, he pointed to one thing that was still good. When the third laughed at responsibility, he kept his own commitments visible. When the fourth and fifth told stories of almost, he shared what he had done that day, not what he planned to do someday.

He did not preach. He did not argue. He simply refused to change his pace.

At first the others mocked the discipline. Then they ignored it. Then, slowly, they began to notice it.

The man of tomorrows started waking earlier. The skeptic admitted one small gratitude before speaking her doubts. The one who laughed at responsibility kept a single promise. The two who had nearly rebuilt began to rebuild in pieces instead of in speeches.

Years passed.

The young man’s plans became real. His work bore fruit. Opportunities opened. He did not leave the table. He strengthened it. The oak that once held empty rings now held maps, notebooks, and the marks of honest labor.

The sixth chair was still his.

But it no longer represented drift. It represented choice.

The table had not changed him into its image. He had changed what was normal at the table.

In that town, people still said you become the sixth.

They just learned that sometimes the sixth becomes the standard.

Half the journey is trusting yourself anyways...

Half the journey is trusting yourself anyways...

It’s integrating.

Growth doesn’t mean the past stops crossing your mind. It means the memories no longer run your decisions.

Nostalgia isn’t always a signal to return. Often it’s just familiarity feeling comfortable. Comfort and alignment are not the same.

You can miss a chapter and still know you’ve outgrown it.
You can value who you were without becoming that person again.
You can forgive what happened without reopening access.

Healing doesn’t delete memory. It changes your relationship to it.
Unhealed memory pulls you backward.
Healed memory lets you acknowledge and continue.

Most progress is quiet.

The thought appears.
The feeling passes.
And you stay grounded in who you’re becoming.

That’s not detachment.
That’s growth.

Turn the Other Cheek (But Lock the Door)

Turn the Other Cheek (But Lock the Door)

“Tell me something,” I said, stirring my tea like it owed me money. “When is someone healed enough?”

“Enough for what?” Caleb asked.

“Enough to date without detonating the same relationship pattern. Enough to preach about how radically they’ve changed. Enough to stop being ‘formerly this’ and start being ‘actually different.’”

Caleb leaned back. “You sound irritated.”

“I’m not irritated,” I said.

He just stared.

“…Okay. I’m mildly irritated.”

He laughed. “Alright. Go on.”

“It feels like people enlist in the Military of Self-Improvement, skip bootcamp, show up to deployment for a week, get sent home because they messed up… and now they’re telling Normandy stories.”

“Normandy?” he smirked.

“Yes. Storming the beaches. Trauma. Bullets. Brotherhood. Meanwhile they didn’t even make it through OSMEAC.”

“So what’s the real issue?” he asked.

“The real issue,” I sighed, “is I don’t think change is a light switch. You don’t just say ‘Jesus changed me’ and boom… factory reset. It’s time. Consistency. Community. The same face in every room. For a while.”

Caleb nodded. “So you don’t believe in grace?”

“I do,” I said quickly. “That’s the problem. Jesus says charity. Turn the other cheek. Forgive. Don’t judge.”

“And?”

“And I’m trying to figure out where charity ends… and stupidity begins.”

He laughed out loud.

“I’m serious,” I said. “How do you love someone without letting them repeatedly injure you? How do you forgive without handing them the keys to your house?”

Caleb took a slow sip of his drink.

“Maybe forgiveness isn’t the same as proximity.”

I blinked. “Explain.”

“You can forgive someone and still not trust them. You can love someone and still require evidence of stability. Even Jesus didn’t entrust Himself to everyone.”

I sat back.

“So healed enough isn’t perfection,” I said slowly.

“No,” he replied. “It’s stability. When the same trigger that used to wreck you now just… passes.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then you’re still in bootcamp.”

I stared at my tea.

“So when can someone start telling war stories?”

Caleb smiled. “When they don’t feel the need to.”

We sat in silence.

“You know,” he added, “your frustration might not be about their fake war stories.”

“Oh?”

“It might be about you not wanting to be fooled again.”

That one landed.

I exhaled. “That’s annoyingly insightful.”

“I try.”

“So what’s the fine line?” I asked. “Between grace and boundaries?”

“Mercy for imperfection,” he said. “Standards for access.”

I nodded slowly.

Maybe healing isn’t about shouting from rooftops.

Maybe it’s about the day the old pattern shows up…

…and you don’t.

End scene.

My yoga partner is cooler than yours.

My yoga partner is cooler than yours.

I stop lying to myself
about what is going to grow.

I gave attention to ideas,
to silence I dressed up as meaning,
to absence I called potential.

That part is mine.
No blame to pass around.

This season is not for forcing.
It is for clearing ground,
pulling energy back
and putting it where work is done.

Fantasy builds nothing.
Attention does.

The light returns slowly.
So do I.

I will keep the flame,

I will keep the flame,

I read it every morning and every night. The recruit laminated copy I carried everywhere is still somewhere upstate in New York, but the lessons remain.

The poem isn't about knowledge per se; it’s about intelligence in the truest sense: judgment under pressure, discipline without ego, humility in success, and steadiness in failure.

Facts can be learned. Character has to be forged. I.
Before the ledger, before the word for mine,
there was only the syllable that holds the world:
Ab
the sound a child makes
when the arms it trusts
close around the dark.

II.
Before the many, before the scattering,
there was the Un
not one-as-opposite-of-two
but One-as-breath-before-breathing,
the silence that makes room
for every possible song.

III.
Then the Father leaned in,
whispered the secret step,
and the silence turned:
Ab-un-dance.

IV.
Not the clenched fist.
Not the vault.
Not the anxious counting of tomorrows.
Only this:
the body yielding to gravity and grace at once,
spinning so fast
the difference between
giver and gift
falls away like a robe
no longer needed in summer.

V.
Watch
the prodigal does not ask for inheritance.
He hears the music leaking through the gates
and runs, bankrupt,
already dancing before he arrives.
The Father meets him mid-turn,
laughs,
joins the same rhythm
He never left.

VI.
There is no coin in this economy
that does not melt
the moment it touches the open palm
that is whirling.

VII.
So the storehouses stand empty
and the heart is full.
The table is bare
and the feast has already begun
inside the ribcage.

VIII.
This is the wealth
the misers die guarding:
to learn the step
where your pulse
forgets it was ever separate
from His.

IX.
Ab
Un
Dance.
A single word
broken open
into eternal motion.

X.
Turn, then.
Until having and being had
are the same vertigo.
Until the night itself
leans in,
takes your hand,
and whispers
the name
you forgot
you always were:

Child.

Keep moving.
The music
is your heartbeat
and Mine
and it will not stop
even when the stars burn out.
Dance
until the universe
understands
it was only ever
a love song
learning how to sway.
Abundance.
Abba.
One
Dance.
Forever.

What if the people who spend their lives seeking God in the quiet of meditation, in mystical…

What if the people who spend their lives seeking God in the quiet of meditation, in mystical experiences, or in the energy of the universe… and the people who find God through covenant, ritual, and scripture… aren’t really on different paths at all?

Maybe they’re just climbing the same mountain from opposite sides.

The languages are different, the practices look different, but the summit is the same.

Imagine what could happen if we stopped trying to convince each other and started listening, translating, and walking together.

Those who feel called to share their path are far more effective through the way they live, not by pushing it on others. And those who see themselves as “more enlightened” would do well to remember: nobody’s higher than the other, we’re all just climbing.

Both sides are vital to each other. Mystics bring fresh ways of seeing and connecting with God that can inspire Saints to experience the Spirit in new, personal ways. Saints bring structure, covenant, and disciplined practice that help mystics channel their experiences safely, deepen their understanding, and walk a path of lasting spiritual growth.

The world would be a lot more peaceful, and maybe, a lot closer to the Source we’re all looking for.

"You are not your job, you're not how much money you have in the bank. We’re just STEWARDS.

Temporary babysitters of people, resources, and assets that were here before us and will be here after us.

And if you think being a “good steward” is just about working hard or being nice, you’re delusional and you are part of the problem.

You need TWO things, non-negotiable:

MORALS: Without a functioning moral compass you’re just a high-functioning parasite. All the intelligence in the world doesn’t stop you from exploiting whatever’s under your care for your own ego and bank account.

EDUCATION: Not the woke certificate on your wall; real education. Understanding systems, incentives, history, human nature, and consequences. Because good intentions without knowledge have destroyed more lives than outright evil ever has.

The scariest people on earth?

The highly educated sociopaths who know exactly how to bleed a system dry.

The bleeding-heart idiots who “just want to help” but wreck everything they touch because they never studied how the world actually works.

You want to be proud of what you leave behind? Stop acting like an owner and start acting like a trustee who’s gonna have to give a full account one day. Because you are and you will...

Your children won't be your trophies.

Your wealth won't be your identity.

Your influence won't be your legacy.

It’s all on loan.

Act like it.

Breathe deep, but shun the nose's common way,
Through soul's quiet chambers, let essence hold sway.

Less is more, till scarcity demands the trade,

See with the heart, for eyes weave veils of deceit,

Wield them wisely, as a sage or as slaves.

Play the game with cunning, or perish in lore,

Time isn't just a clock ticking
it's a place we move through,

like walking down a hallway
where all the rooms exist at once.

Maybe fate isn't a force pushing us.
Maybe it's just the shape of the hallway itself.

And free will? That's the feeling
of choosing which door to open next.

Life isn't a straight path to somewhere unknown.
It's a book already written,

and we're turning pages,
one moment at a time.

When I look back,
the past doesn't feel finished.

It feels like a message from tomorrow
lessons planted early
for the days I'd need them most.

Every choice, every person,
every accident that wasn't really an accident
they all fit together

when you step back far enough to see.
Maybe the universe is telling one story.

And time is just how we hear it unfold.

somewhere past rivendell

somewhere past rivendell

i’m somewhere past Rivendell
boots cracked, heart louder than the wind.
the road ain’t magic anymore…
just mud, and stone,
and the ring of my own thoughts
hanging heavy against my chest.

there’s no people of Gondor cheering,
no mustering of the Rohirrim,
nor King Theoden's "Forth Eorlingas"
just the deafening silence of me choosing
to take another step
when no one would blame me for turning back.

i miss the Shire in me…
the part that believed home was a place,
not something you had to build
with shaking hands and unsteady faith.

my Fellowship is small, flawed,
but by Ilúvatar, we walk anyway.
some days I carry them,
some days they carry me.
some days we just bleed beside each other
and call it progress.

there are nights I feel the darkness of Sauron
pacing just beyond the firelight,
whispering: you’re not enough,
you never were.

but the morning comes,
and I’m still here
tired, stubborn,
waiting for second breakfast.

no return of the king yet.
no eruption of Mount Doom.
just a worn-out traveler
carrying the weight of the Ring,

and a few loaves of lembas bread
walking on
long after it would’ve been easier
to lay it down.

perhaps,

“The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.”

Commitment is the act of showing up day after day when no one’s watching.

Commitment is the act of showing up day after day when no one’s watching.

What if today holds the answers
to the prayers of ten years past-
and I can’t even recognize it?

I begged for peace,
and then called it boredom.

I prayed for strength,
and cursed the weight that built it.

I asked for family,
and ran from the mirror it held up to me.

Maybe the divine never said no-
only not as I expected.

Was I ever praying for what I truly wanted,
or just for who I hoped I’d be?

The future came quietly,
slipped into my hands,
and I mistook it for ordinary.

What if today holds the answers
to the prayers of ten years past-
and now I recognize it?

Ashes of Midnight-

Ashes of Midnight-

LOVE

Oh, to love-
or to be loved-
what triumph that would be:
for one soul to dance
and set another free.
What songs we'd sing,
what laughter we'd share,
two hearts entangled
in something rare.
A victory,
a ballad,
a sacred rewrite-
love etched in silence,
burning bright.
But fuse too fast
and flames divide-
for love is a dance,
and timing is tide.
To set one free,
to feel life whole-
what triumph indeed,
to love…
or be loved whole.

DARKNESS

A darkness lingers
only I know.
You think you see-
but in shadows,
you crow.
A shimmer drifts
on a sea gone cold,
where lost horizons
swallow the bold.
Perhaps one day,
the moon will break-
and in its shatter,
chains will shake.
Not with noise,
nor grand reveal-
but with quiet truth
that dares to heal.

HOPE

Still-
a flicker.
In the belly of night,
a whisper stirs:
You may be all right.
Though chained by doubt,
and shrouded in gray,
something unseen
is leading the way.
The stars lean low,
like old friends near-
guiding the broken
through trembling fear.
Not every wound heals,
not every thread mends,
but hope is the stitch
that begins again.
So when love fades
and darkness stays,
hold fast to your flicker-
It knows the way

Decided to trip down the rabbit hole- here's a snip of October over the past decade. It claws, it clings,
it rushes, it roars.
It seeps through the cracks,
it breaks through the doors.
It carves out your chest,
yet softens the stone.
It drowns you in silence,
yet claims you its own.
It smiles like comfort,
then cuts like a knife.
It carries the weight
of your half-lived life.
You feed it with secrets,
you fight, you concede;
still it pulls you beneath
with an infinite need.
But this river remembers,
and this river stays.
It knows every wound,
it knows every phase.
It mirrors your grief,
yet it mirrors your fire;
a current of loss,
a current of desire.
And though it may ache,
though it tears, though it bends;
the river within you
is the place that mends.

Boussole

Boussole

It trickles, it tickles,
fickle as an autumn leaf.
It strikes at midnight,
threading joy through grief.
It gnashes and gnaws
like baby piranha teeth;
yet hums… yet sings,
and spins its magic rings.
It’s an up-and-down,
a side-to-side ride,
a whole constellation
of wonders inside.
It is not the dark,
it does not bark,
it rises each dawn
to sing with the lark.
It will not stop rushing
until it strikes its mark.
It is the binding,
it is the grinding,
it is the endless,
spiraled winding.
It is the pulse,
the burning, the finding;
the soul’s forever quest,
its compass always guiding.

The Path You Breathe

The Path You Breathe

Let it flow. Let it go.
Every road begins below.
Not with maps or path ready shoes
but with the silence you refuse.
The sunrise doesn’t beg to teach.
It shows the truth you cannot reach.
You speak of light, but fear the shade.
You preach of peace you never made.
The path won’t wait. The path won’t shout.
It winds through everything you doubt.
It’s not the trail you think you see
it’s every breath you failed to be.
Spring will bloom, and summer boast.
But autumn listens. Winter hosts.
The leaves that fall don’t ask to stay.
They give their color, then decay.
So walk it slow, with open tread.
Bury the lessons you misread.
And God help the step
that never touched the ground
or the breath that passed
but never made a sound.
